Internet Access and Computer Use Policy
As part of the library’s commitment to provide access to information beyond the library’s physical collection, the following policy governs access to digital resources for everyone regardless of age.
Internet Access, Public Computer Use and Printing Policies
Users of the Internet and wireless network are reminded that it is not a secure environment. The library is not responsible for any sharing of sensitive information such as banking or personal information.
Due to the vast amount of information available on the Internet, users should be aware that information can be inaccurate, out dated or offensive to others. The Library is not responsible for any material accessed on the Internet.
A library card or guest pass with a photo ID is required to use the Internet computers or word processors which are governed by management software. Users will be required to agree to user policies when using the system.
The library’s public computers do not allow for any information to be permanently saved, this is to protect the users. Users should protect their work by saving personal documents to a personal device or by the use of email. The library does have USB drives available for use or for sale. The library is not responsible for any work not saved as recommended above.
The library network uses a filtering software as required by the Children’s Internet Protection Act of 2003 (CIPA). Filters can unintentionally block access to materials that are appropriate, therefore staff can override filters under certain circumstances. Please see a library supervisor for more information.
Acceptable Use of Library Computers/Equipment
Library staff have the right to monitor computer use should users violate this use policy and can ask for violators to leave the computer and or library. Staff have been directed to notify the authorities as necessary.
Intentional misuse of library equipment for the purpose of illegal, unethical and unauthorized activities will not be allowed.
Any attempt to alter, hack or break into computer systems is prohibited.
All users are expected to be courteous and ethical in their use of library equipment.
Internet computers are in a public area therefore standards of acceptable use will be enforced.
Sensitivity to the content viewed should be considered.
All users are required to adhere to copyright law, licensing agreements and individual website policies.
Parents, not staff, are responsible for their children’s use of library computers and the information they access. The library is not responsible for content found on the Internet.
Library staff continue to keep patron’s information, computer use and accessed materials confidential and private. Authorities requesting access will be required to produce appropriate paperwork for the library director or library trustee.

Guidelines for Computer Use with Children (please also see: Children’s Library Use Policy):
- Use the Internet with your child or children
- Explain what is or is not appropriate computer use
- Encourage children to use the Library’s home page (www.narlib.org)
- Limit the amount of time spent on the computer
- Instruct children to never give out personal information
- Educate children on the pros and cons of information found on the Internet. Is the website from a reputable source? Check to see who is providing the information. Also check that the information is current and accurate.
