LORI CERTIFICATION SERVICE POLICY

The Maury Loontjens Memorial Library (MLM Library) is a municipal public library serving the residents of the Town of Narragansett and complies with standards established by the Library of Rhode Island (LORI) and the American Library Association (ALA). The MLM Library also provides service to other Rhode Island residents and visitors as well.
Services for all ages are made available during regular library hours. Staff responds to requests received in person, by telephone, in writing, and via e-mail. Borrowing privileges are extended to patrons holding valid Ocean State Libraries (OSL) cards obtained by presenting a valid ID and proof of RI residency. The Library complies with OSL policies and procedures. Non-Residents staying in the RI area for more than six weeks can obtain an OSL library card with a $25 fee.
Library materials are available for borrowing through the Ocean State Library holds system (with the exception of new DVDs, Playaways, and a browsing book collection). Non-OSL materials can be requested through our Reference Services (LORI interlibrary loan system). The MLM Library follows LORI standards as well as the ALA Interlibrary Loan Code. Remote access to the Library’s holdings is made possible through the library’s membership in Ocean State Library Consortium.
Free meeting space is available to small groups at the MLM Library. The Library Board has created a “Use of Space Policy” that defines the use of space and is determined by library staff based on the impact of use on regular library services. This policy is posted on the library website (narlib.org).
The MLM Library offers a variety of educational and cultural programs for patrons of all ages. Library programs are free and open to the public. At times, donations are requested to defray the cost of materials provided. Some programs do require pre-registration due to space restraints and at times seating will be limited as determined by the Town of Narragansett’s building codes and state regulations for the safety of all.
The MLM Library also provides free access to the Internet, research databases and word processing through the use of public computers. E-readers are circulated as part of the library’s material collection. E-books can be borrowed as part of our consortium services, using our E-Zone platform. Digital literacy classes, technology drop-in sessions and one-on-one lessons are also available to the public.
