The history of Wampum told by the Tomaquag Museum. Wampumpeage: Traditions and Continuance
Wampumpeage, meaning “white shell beads” in the Narragansett language, reflects both artistry and tradition. Fashioned from quahog, whelk, and other local shells, wampum carries a story deeper than beads. While misrepresented in colonial records as money, to the Narragansett and other local Tribal Nations, it embodies connection, identity, and meaning.
